I am an Advertising faculty member at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I teach New Media Design, Strategic Communications Graphics, Social & Mobile Media and Visual Literacy courses. My specialties are in graphic design, web design, interactive strategy, photography, social media, mobile marketing, emerging media, branding, strategic communications, videography, video editing, technology and instructional design.
Currently, I am involved with a NIH grant project developing mobile applications that are interactive comics for the World of Viruses project. In 2011, I was named an Apple Distinguished Educator for creative uses of technology in education. Additionally, I worked on a $1.8 million grant, the Omaha Science Media Project, leading a group of students in the development of the project’s website and promotional materials.
A graduate from Iowa State University’s College of Design I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts specializing in Visual Studies. My degree had an emphasis in Drawing, Photography, & Computer Graphics and included a semester abroad at Swansea University in Wales. I also hold an interdisciplinary master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Marketing, Communication, and Advertising. Currently, I am working towards a Ph.D. at UNL in Instructional Technology with an emphasis in informal learning using emerging technologies.
I have worked as a designer in the Midwest and Southwest. After some time in Des Moines, Iowa at a video production house I moved to Tucson, Arizona and worked in the trade show industry. While in the desert I maintained Web sites as well as designed and produced a wide variety of print materials, primarily large-format graphics, for trade shows and conventions.
In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my wife, Madeline, being with friends, computers, photography, art, playing guitar, cooking, learning and traveling. In a former life, I played drums in a punk band for almost five years, and recorded with a country band called Moonshine Radio.
This blog are areas I’m interested in regarding technology, design, advertising, education, art, etc… I also have a freelance design business, www.waglerdesigns.com.
